Tension and fears have continued to build up at the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State following the killing of a female student by a yet to be identified gunmen last weekend.
The victim was identified as Toju Gbubemi Udu, a statistics student. Her lifeless body was found with a handbag containing her personal items at the polytechnic's staff quarter junction in mysterious circumstances.
Speaking with SaharaReporters, a student from the same department as the victim disclosed that Ms. Udu had planned to attend the beauty pageant commemorating the polytechnic students’ celebration.
SaharaReporters reliably learned that the Ms. Udu was killed by a notorious armed gang known as the "Ghana Burgers," based in Sapele.
According to sources, men of the Nigeria Police Force have allegedly demanded money from the victim’s family before any investigation could be carried out to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing.
"Just yesterday, a 15-year-old old girl was kidnapped in Oghara by these reigning 'burgers’ and when the case was reported, the police requested for fuel money to commence investigation, which the poor mother could not provide,” one source stated.
Meanwhile, Itsekiri students in the polytechnic have called on the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Jude Sinebe, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, the Divisional Police Officer of the Oghara police station, the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara and the Student Union Government (SUG) to investigate the death of Ms. Udu and bring justice to the perpetrators.
The students also notified civil society organizations such as the Concerned itsekiri Social Media Activists (CISMA), National Association Of Itsekiri Students (NAIS), National Association Of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG), and Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC) of the gruesome murder of Ms. Udu.
"Until justice is served on the extrajudicial killing of an Itsekiri young lady by these Ghana Burgers who have taken Sapele as a base to carry out their nefarious and unholy acts upon young people, we shall not relent. I am using this medium to call on well-meaning Itsekiri sons and daughters. This is an injury to one, culminating to an injury to all; the situation surrounding her death is of no essence as the damage has already been done,” one Itsekiri student said.
"To all Itsekiri political office holders, appointed and elected, this is a test of our resolve and together we shall make them hear our voice. No one shall spill the blood of an innocent Itsekiri child and go scot-free. Never. We are using this medium to call on the State government and the security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to book or else we will shut this State down. I repeat, no Itsekiri child deserves to die in the hands of any one.”
As at the time of filing in this report, calls made to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Celestina Kalu, were rebuffed.
