Six Nsukka Prison Escapees Recaptured, NPS Says

The jailbreak occurred on Tuesday night between 12 PM and 3 AM. The NPS has not yet confirmed how many inmates escaped.

Six of the prisoners who escaped from Nsukka prison have been recaptured, Isaiah Amariri, Enugu State comptroller of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), said on Thursday.

The jailbreak occurred on Tuesday night between 12 PM and 3 AM. The NPS has not yet confirmed how many inmates escaped.

“I cannot give the exact figure for now as investigations are still on,” Mr. Amariri said.

“We will send our findings to the Comptroller-General of prisons who will make public the exact number and cause of Nsukka prison jail break.”

He explained that the NPS is liaising with the police and community vigilante groups in order to track down the remaining inmates, adding that any officials found to be responsible for the prison break would be penalized.

“After investigations on the jail break, any person in the service found to have been involved or aided the Tuesday jail break will be arrested and prosecuted no matter his or her position,” Mr. Amariri said.

The comptroller assured the public that the security surrounding Nsukka prison would be enhanced.

“Security has been beefed up in and around Nsukka prisons with serious surveillance on the prisons facilities, inmates and staff,” he said.

Mr. Amariri encouraged citizens to report any information regarding the fugitives to the authorities.
