Cancer Patient At Center Of #SaveMayowa Controversy Is Dead

According to a statement recently issued by Mayowa's family, she was flown to South Africa for treatment.

Mayowa Ahmed, the beneficiary of the controversial #SaveMayowa fundraising campaign, died on Sunday morning.

The news was broken by her cousin Habeeb Odufuye through his twitter account, @Asiwaju_Foye.

“By Allah, in who’s hands our lives is, Mayowa Ahmed has left us in this world. We pray that Jannat becomes her home. She tried, we tried but God’s will prevailed,” Foye tweeted.

The news that the fundraiser was a scam first appeared on Linda Ikeji's blog. After series of counter accusations from family members and well wishers of Mayowa, Linda later apologized to the family for the publication.

According to a statement recently issued by Mayowa's family, she was flown to South Africa for treatment.

“As a family, it was our wish for Mayowa to leave the country on the earliest available flight to start her treatment but due to the much rumored and alleged scam, we were faced with an overwhelming task of getting her flight documentations ready and missed the earliest scheduled appointment for August 1 in the UAE. Mayowa finally left the shores of Nigeria to South Africa last Thursday to start her treatment," the statement read.

Mayowa suffered from ovarian cancer.
