The Nigerian Police Force on Tuesday denied reports that its officers arrested and abused 14 student union leaders in Lagos on Monday, according to a source from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
On Monday, students belonging to the Lagos chapter of NANS were arrested after attending a court hearing on a dispute between the University of Lagos (UNILAG) student union and the university administration. Some students were beaten while others had their vehicles and other personal belongings confiscated. According to a source from NANS, the police were collaborating with UNILAG officials who felt threatened by student activists.

NANS has subsequently called upon the Nigeria Police Force to release the students and compensate them for the damages inflicted upon them. The group declared that it would “resist further demonic actions against students and their umbrella union,” vowing not to rest until the students are released.
