Where are the women?

October 23, 2016

Bastardization of women

It was Socrates who said “an unexamined life is not worth living”, following from this you cannot command respect unless you know your worth which is as a result of self examination. Is there any woman who can examine the life of womanhood in the light of what President Buhari said of his wife, the first lady? Well I still insist where are the women for change? Where are the women activist? Where are the women struggling for women's liberation and equality, where are the women struggling for gender equality? Well placing women at the lower level of existence did not start with the President Buhari’s concept of I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room. a lot of people have seen women as no-relevance from the ancient time, In the history of philosophers, the sophist, taught that man is the measure of of all things, this place man as the norm and parameter of what exist, this believe is a sort of relegation of women to the backstage, Aristotle is another philosopher who portrayed women as defective males; not only does she lack a rational faculty, she is also inferior to man, Hegel is another philosopher who sees women as incapable of holding political post because they are whimsical and pretty intellectually, the relegation of women to the background continues even in religious  scene where in Christianity women are placed in the position of helpmate and therefore should be submissive while in Islamic religion they are place in almost the position of slaves. If philosophical luminaries, religious leaders and political gurus reason in this form and placed women at the down echo-long of human existence in the past can we still say their mundane ideology is true today? Some women have tried and proved them wrong while others seems to be only spectators.

Are women really Spectators of events?

Felix A.O Mcdon wrote in his book you can rise to the top, that there are three set of human beings on earth: those who never care about what happens, those who watch things happen, and those who make things happen. Based on his analysis and what has happened in Nigeria and some part of the world, women can be described as belonging to the first and second group of people; those who never care about what happens and those who watch things happen, belonging to this set of group proves that women are spectators of phenomena, if not why are they silent? Why are They not on the street walk rejecting the idea that they belong to the kitchen, living room and the other room, surprisingly, recently senator  Binta Masi  Garba representing Adamawa North, Was even proud that she belong to the kitchen, the truth of this kind of thought is borne out by the inferiorization of women by women themselves. Though there are those who have proof to be resourceful and disagree with the idea that they only belong to kitchen, historically some of them are the legendary queen Amina of Zaria, Then queen of Ethiopian queen Sheba, the queen Mother of Ashanti in Ghana, Dora Akunyili the former NAFDAC boss, Indira Gandhi of India but majority of women like senator Binta are very proud to belong to kitchen, their types are those that live and die as individuals and their memories are easily forgotten because they did nothing positive that they could be remembered for.

Who speaks up?

When chibok girls were kidnapped bring back our girls group spoke and the world heard and every effort was on rescuing the chibok girls, when Niger avenger came up Nigerian Army were there to content them, when CBN governor's wife was kidnapped police were there to rescue her, when Sen. Aisha could not win election in Taraba, women threaten to walk naked in the street, the real question is who speaks for women now? Do they really belong to kitchen, living room or the other room or are they  only room properties, where are chimamanda, Ngozi, oby Ezekwesili? are they still in existence? Why are there are no street protest to proof the worth of womanhood is more than that of room services, where are women? This is not only Aisha Buhari’s problem, it is and it should be women problems, it is a shame that no woman have resign or gone on hunger strike to protest the dehumanization of women by President Buhari concept of belonging to kitchen, living room and the other room.

Finally, there is a belief among women that what a man can do, woman can do better, yet suddenly women have become  deaf and dumb because it is only in Nigeria that anything can happen, I am waiting to see women for change initiative in action.
