Before the Living spring drys off – Resuscitating Osun State before it is too Late

December 10, 2016

Osun state is presently losing its position in the comity of states dues to lake of proper governance and the totala absence of a dempcratic government

The Osun State capital, Osogbo is known to be the of the busiest cities in Osun state, Osogbo is an age-long city with great historic presence, it also house the UNESCO approved Osun groove, where yearly people from around the world gathers to celebrate the Osun Osogbo festival. Osun state is blessed with great cultural heritage and the people are extremely creative. The has twenty (20) local governments until most recently when the present governor of the state Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola created more local Development Councils just to replicate what is obtainable in Lagos in the state.

Osun state indigenes are known to be very heard working irrespective of the abundance of minerals resources in the state, instead of lazing around and waiting for the government to come create wealth for them Osun state indigenes would rather do that for themselves by working extra hours on their farms, cultivating, weaving of mats and other doing their buying and selling craft which they have been known for.

Successive democratic government have not done enough in helping open Osun state to the rest of the world. Since 1999, what has been experienced in the state in terms of development can’t be said to be sustaining. The two major political parties in the country the PDP and the then AD now APC have had their fair share of controlling the state.

Today Osun state is rated as one of the poorest state in Nigeria, the state can not boast of any substantive industry that serves the whole country, the state can not boast of stable electricity supply despite the fact that it naturally consumes lesser energy due to absence of major industries and companies. The state can not boast of good and efficient water supply despite the fact that it is referred to as the state of the living spring, it is worthy to note that during the regime of Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, series of mini water scheme projects were embarked on but the irony of it all is that they were not properly managed.

The people of Osun state are the worst hit by the ongoing recession in Nigeria today, since the government in Osun state has not done enough to bring in companies and industries into the state so as to help the state grows her GDP, create direct jobs for indigenes and help people less reliant in government. The state has been and has continue to be a full consuming state, hence whatever what coming from the federal government goes straight into recurrent expenditure and wont even be enough, the state has to result to borrowing with no means of paying back and how do you embark on a capital projects in all this, your guess is as good as mine.

I have personally advocated that the job of every state executive is first to be able to create job, employment, security of lives and property and be less dependent of the federal government largess. Any bank managing director who finds it difficult to pay staffs salaries without recourse to share holder funds and CBN borrowing would be shown the door by the second month and even the bank will be taken over so why is it so different in government and why should the same theory not apply to our elected persons at the political space?

What the people of Osun State are going through today can be avoided if the government of the day will look inward and create means of creating revenues for the state? Aside the teachers what are the impacts of the people working from other ministries towards the society development, every ministry should be self-sufficient; government arena should not be seen as a tea party place where you come for free meals without being productive.

The government should woo manufacturing companies and industries into coming to Osun state and also create great incentives which include tax waivers and all that.

The government of the day should constitute a progressive a cabinet, this will help bring right thinking and Intellectuals on board of governance in Osun state, what we have presently in Osun state a situation where there is no cabinet in place according the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria is disparaging.

Our people in Osun state are crying every day; civil servants have turned beggars on the streets, from Osogbo to ipetu Ijesha, from Iwo to OSU the people of Osun state are dying of hunger and starvation. We implore the government to at least do something about it and help reduce the rate of poverty in our state.
