STAFEC Petitions Governor Amosun Over ‘Heavy Extortion’ Of Students, Demands Free And Accessible Education

January 23, 2017

The Save TASUED and Fund Education Coalition (STAFEC) has petitioned Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun over what it described as the numerous abnormalities and countless unfortunate scenarios now prevalent at the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED).

In the petition, jointly signed by several other organization, the group describes the practice as “heavy extortion” of students by the Ogun State Government with the connivance of the management of TASUED.

Among others, they are demanding the immediate cancellation of the N25, 000 registration fee; that the government end the illegal taxation of students; an end to the fraudulent N20, 000 penalty for late submission of the green file; an immediate breakdown of how all the fees and charges are being spent; and an immediate probe of the management of the Tai Solarin University of Education.

Other signatories of the letter are the Alliance of Nigerian Students against Neoliberal Attacks (ANSA), the Abraham Adesanya Students’ Union, and the Students and Youth Activists Support Initiative (SAYASI).

“The State government and management of TASUED currently impose fees/charges with questionable and unfounded bases,” they said.  “Aside from the outrageous school fees, there are other charges that can only be regarded as either fraudulent or baseless.”
