The Enugu State Internal Revenue Board sealed off eight banks in the state capital on Monday for their failure to pay around N1b in taxes to the government, Channels TV reports.

The eight banks affected are Access Bank PLC, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Skye Bank, Union Bank, Unity Bank, Heritage Bank, Keystone Bank and Sterling Bank. Agents sealed off the banks beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Emeka Odo, Enugu State Internal Revenue Board chairman, told reporters that the board received orders from a State High Court to lock up the offending banks for failing to pay taxes to the state government.

Mr. Odo explained that Monday’s exercise was the first phase of a crackdown on banks and companies operating in the state that fail to fulfill their civic duties to the state government.

He assured customers of the offending banks that the government would take actions to remedy the situation and enable the banks to better serve their customers.
