Supreme Court To Hear Sheriff's Motion Against Makarfi Faction's Appeal May 4

Sheriff is seeking an order of the apex court terminating the appeal filed in the name of the party by the Makarfi-led faction of the party.

The Supreme Court on Thursday yielded to both factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by the court-backed National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff, and the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee sacked by the Court of Appeal, Ahmed Makarfi.

Relying on the February 17, 2017 judgment of the Port Harcourt Division of the Court of Appeal recognizing him as the authentic leader of the party, Sheriff is seeking an order of the apex court terminating the appeal filed in the name of the party by the Makarfi-led faction of the party.

In satisfying the two groups on Thursday, the Justice Tanko Muhammad-led five-man panel of the apex court granted the Makarfi group’s prayer for an abridgment of time within which the respondents to the appeal must respond and file their briefs and also gave the Sheriff group till May 4 to argue its motion seeking to strike out the appeal.

A similar motion seeking an order striking out the appeal was also filed in the name of the PDP by the Sheriff group and the apex court also on Thursday fixed the same date for its hearing.
