At Least 80 Killed In Kabul Bombing

The blast sent the Afghan capital into panic, as the bomb was described by officials as “one of the biggest” to have ever exploded in the city.

No fewer than 80 people were killed and 463 wounded in Kabul, Afghanistan early on Wednesday when a truck bomb detonated in the city’s diplomatic district.

The blast sent the Afghan capital into panic, as the bomb was described by officials as “one of the biggest” to have ever exploded in the city. Witnesses said that smoke was still emerging from the scene of the explosion two hours later, while others reported that windows as far as a mile away from the site shattered.

“This is one of the biggest attacks in Afghanistan that I have ever seen,” Al Jazeera reporter Qais Azimy said. “It’s a very sad and very bloody day for the people of Kabul.”

Al Jazeera reported that the truck exploded near Zanbaq Square in Kabul’s 10th district, an area populated with government offices and foreign embassies, as well as shops and restaurants.

The New York Times reported that the German Embassy was “extensively damaged,” and an Afghan security guard dispatched to the embassy was killed in the blast.

At the time of publication, no group claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for the Taliban has insisted that the group was not behind the attack.
