Bribery Saga: Group Tells EFCC To Investigate Melaye, Justice Ikpeme

The group urged the EFCC to immediately invite the judge and the senator for questioning.

A pro-democracy group, Concerned Nigerians, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately investigate a bribery-related recording of a conversation between Mr. Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, and Justice Akon Ikpeme of the Cross Rivers State High Court. The recording and its transcript were recently published by SaharaReporters.

The group’s demand was contained in a statement it issued on Thursday. Jointly signed by Messrs. Deji Adeyanju and John Danfulani, Convener and Secretary respectively, the statement said after a careful analysis of the audio recording, the group concluded that Justice Ikpeme was bribed by Mr. Melaye.

The group urged the EFCC to immediately invite the judge and the senator for questioning.

“The EFCC must investigate the circumstances of this recording, the allegations insinuated therein and the veracity of the recording. Senator Dino Melaye and Justice Akon Ikpeme of the Cross Rivers State High Court must be invited for questioning by the EFCC. A thorough investigation must be done in this matter,” the group demanded.

It reasoned that the bribery saga is another test for the anti-corruption efforts of the Federal Government, which needs to assure the public that the anti-graft war recognizes no sacred cows.

“Since members of the opposition have being at the receiving end in the fight against corruption of this administration, the investigation and subsequent prosecution of the culprits in this matter might correct the established notion,” said Concerned Nigerians.

It called on Mr. Ibrahim Magu, acting EFCC Chairman, to order an investigation into the allegations.
