Police Say 115 Suspects Arrested, No Death In Abuja Shiite Protest

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command said it arrested 115 members of the Shiite group at the scene of the protest by members of the Ibrahim El-Zakzaky led Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja on Monday.

In a statement issued by the Police, the force also claimed that members of the Shiite movement also destroyed some government and Police operational vehicles 22 police personnel during the protest.

It, however, denied the claim that one of the protesters was killed during the subsequent clash of protesters with the police.

The Police said exhibits like catapults, iron bars, stones, ball bearings and pink headbands were recovered from members of the Shiite group during the clash while promising that the arrested suspects will be charged to the court upon the conclusion of investigations.

“The FCT Police Command hereby warns members of Shiites movement from further disrupting the peace, harmony and free flow of traffic in FCT.

“This is to also to urge the members of the public particularly parents not to allow their children or wards to be used as an instrument of violence in any demonstration by any group that could jeopardize public peace and harmony.

“It is therefore imperative to state that anyone caught in the act of violent demonstration or any act capable of causing the breach of public peace will be made to face the wrath of the law.

“Meanwhile, the Command wishes to state that contrary to speculations from some sections of the media, no life was lost in the violent protest as the Police operatives deployed to quell the protest were professional in handling the situation,” the police command said in the statement signed by its spokesperson, DSP Anjuguri Manzah.
