Communities around Cluster 10 flow stations connected to Oil Mining Lease (OML) 30 in Delta state have threatened to shut down every flow station processing oil from the acreage; an action which will lead to the loss of 100,000 barrels per day for Nigeria.
While speaking to newsmen in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Chairman, OML30 Cluster 10 Forum of Pipelines and Well Head Communities, Joseph Ibuje, said the threat was necessitated by a failure of the operators to implement agreed accords and come for a review of the existing global Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU) between the communities and the operators: “We have been asking for what is due us from the operator of the facilities in OML 30."
"Now all efforts to get them on the ground have proven abortive. They look at us as docile and that we do not know what we are doing. We have not been fighting, we have been asking for our benefits through dialogue.”
He said the affected communities had therefore resolved to close down all facilities in their territory. “We will shut down the flow station. We are going to shut it down any moment from now. And all the facilities, every well-head, we will shut down.”
There are 12 cluster flow stations in OML 30, which is operated by Heritage Energy. Its wells are located in 111 communities. On Monday, women, and youths closed-off two major flow stations in Erhoike and Olomoro, two of the 111 communities.
Mrs. Angela Michael one of the protesting women told Vanguard that they want their children to get jobs and go to school: “Our youths want to go to school. The scholarship they promised us we have not seen. Our youths are not employed in the company. We want all the issues to be addressed.”
