PDP Lawmakers Barricade Senate Chamber, Ask Nigerians To Defend Democracy

August 7, 2018

According to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), 50 senators and 120 House of Reps members are in the National Assembly lobby, keeping vigil.

The Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP) lawmakers said they have barricaded the entrance of the Senate chamber to prevent any eventuality that may lead to the removal of Senate President, Bukola Saraki, just as they urged Nigerians to rise up in defence of democracy.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the lawmakers, Yusuf Tajudeen said the PDP senators and members of the House of Representatives are currently laying siege to the main entrance of the Senate chamber to prevent the attempt to change the leadership of the senate.

"Right now, we have about 50 senators and 120 members. We are in the white house lobby seated there, and keeping vigil, because what happened this morning confirmed the earlier rumour that there is an attempt to use undemocratic means to change the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives."

He called on Nigerians to rise up against the move.

"The essence of democratic governance is to allow people to air their views and opinions even when you disagree with them. You mobilise support for your own view and majority have their way and minority have their say," he stated.
