The state secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Udoka Estate, Awka, has been sealed by the Anambra Police Command, following a protest led by Ndubuisi Durkins, Assistant Legal Adviser of the party.

Haruna Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said the action followed a fracas that occurred earlier on Wednesday, noting that the closure of the office was to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

“The police would take control of the area until when normalcy returns,” he said.

According to NAN, Mohammed denied the claims that some of the PDP supporters were brutalised by thugs and policemen.

Speaking on the cause of the protest, Durkins said it was as a result of the imposition of a caretaker leadership on the party by the national hierarchy of the party, in spite of a court judgment that annulled the arrangement.

The protesters accused the chairman of the caretaker committee, Ndubuisi Nwobu, of being a sellout pursuing selfish interests.

The caretaker committee members were said to have broken the secretariat gate to gain entrance into the premises to hold a meeting.

However, Nwobu, the caretaker chairman, while speaking on the protest, said it was a plan by the opposition to sabotage PDP's chances in the 2019 elections in Anambra, just as he accused a senatorial aspirant seeking to contest on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) sponsored the protesters.
