Civic Media Lab in collaboration with KHASH.ng has launched a mobile application, ZABE, to monitor elections in Nigeria.

The app would be effective from the 2018 Osun State gubernatorial elections.

Zabe, according to the groups, is a web-based solution that can be used to collect data sent by observers at individual polling units. The app is designed to sort, analyse and report data sent to it using a simple and clean interface that is very interactive and easy to use.

The groups also noted that Zabe would be the first crowdsourcing indigenous proprietary software that has the capability to monitor elections in Nigeria, while also adding that it would help in providing real-time detailed information on Nigerian elections.

According to Khalil Halilu, the project lead, it is important that all Nigerians understand that electoral duty goes beyond just voting.

He said: “Nigerians have to know that they have a responsibility of ensuring that their votes are secured. This app will ensure that they can easily fulfill that part of their obligation.

“The app is easy to use and simple to operate. It will help citizens play an active part in the electioneering process to ensure transparency. Users of the app can report incidents within their locality and as well send results.”

On his part, Seun Akinfolarin, Director of Civic Media Lab, added that "the lab is happy to forge partnerships with technology companies to find new civic tech solutions that would help improve our democracy."

"This would be a first of many such collaborations," he said.

Zabe is available for download on Google Playstore and IOS and is ready for use with the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Osun State scheduled for September 22, 2018.
