Food Poisoning Kills Couple, Nephew, Unborn Baby — And A Rat — In Bayelsa

The trio — the 35-year-old husband, Orji Igwenta, and 10-year-old boy Obinna Ogbani, said to be the nephew of Igwenta — were found lifeless and even a rat, which was suspected to have eaten crumbs of the food, was also found dead in the apartment.

An expectant mother, her husband and a 10-year-old nephew have died in at Swali area, a suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The incident was said to have occured as a result of food poisoning.

The food was prepared by the wife; however, it is still unclear how it got poisoned.

The trio — the 35-year-old husband, Orji Igwenta, and 10-year-old boy Obinna Ogbani, said to be the nephew of Igwenta — were found lifeless and even a rat, which was suspected to have eaten crumbs of the food, was also found dead in the apartment.

A trader, who preferred not to be named, said: "A great tragedy has occurred at Winners Road, Swali. It was a black afternoon for us as a complete family is wiped out by food poison.

"Father, pregnant mother and a 10-year-boy living with them all died. How their food was poisoned is still mysterious. Even a rat that ate the remnants also died. Vengeance belongs to the Lord if is done by human enemies."

Asinim Butswat, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the tragedy and described their death as sudden and unnatural.

He said: "The  landlord of the deceased reported that the deceased — one Orji Igwenta 'm' 35yrs a native of Ozallah community in Nkanu West LGA of Enugu State  and a keke rider, with the wife, Mrs Nkem Igwenta 'f' 34 yrs, wife and Obinna Ogbani 'm' 10yrs, a brother to Orji Igwenta — were found dead in their room at the same address.

“Also found dead by their side is a rat, which is suspected to have eaten the same poisoned food with the family."
