A court in France has sentenced the father of the baby rescued by a Malian immigrant, Mamoudou Gassama, to three months suspended sentence.

The father was convicted for neglecting his parental responsibilities, and ordered to take a course in being a better parent.

According to the BBC, the father's lawyer, Romain Ruiz, told Le Figaro that his client was very aware of the mistake he had made.

Arguing the case, the prosecutor said the father, whose name has not been released, left the toddler unattended to and went to the supermarket then took longer to return as he spent time playing Pokémon Go.

Gassama, now famously dubbed African spiderman, scaled to the fourth floor of a building where the four-year-old child was hanging precariously.

He has since been given French citizenship, and personally thanked by President Emmanuel Macron.
