The Theatre Command of the Operation Lafiya Dole, in conjunction with the Borno State Government, is working towards relocating the residents of Baga to safer locations in view of the ongoing military operations in the area.
The command’s spokesman, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement yesterday. He, however, said there was no basis to vacate Bama, Dikwa and Monguno Local Government Areas of the state.
He said unscrupulous individuals with likely sinister motives were trying to create panic and unnecessary humanitarian problems for undisclosed reasons.
He said those people were plotting to instigate the inhabitants of the three communities to abandon their communities and relocate to IDPs’ camps, urging the residents to remain calm.
“We would like to further state that there is no basis for the people of Bama, Dikwa and Monguno to vacate their respective communities”’, he emphasised.
Nwachukwu urged members of the public to remain calm as the military was in firm control to guarantee their safety and security, saying “We would like to warn that any attempt to cause further panic through this false alarm would be viewed very seriously”.
Meanwhile, Daily Trust learnt that hundreds of thousands of the residents of the fishing and farming communities had fled Doro and Baga, majority of them still missing.
A member of the Borno State CJTF said, “soldiers had themselves fled from the Kukawa LGA communities (including Baga and Doro) to Monguno on Friday, but a military reinforcement was quickly mobilised there between Saturday and Sunday.
“While thousands have found their way to Maiduguri from Baga and Doro and surrounding communities, my members have reliably reported to me that no fewer than two thousand fled to Yobe State through Damasak and Gaidam,” he said.
