Justice Olamide Oloyede (retd.), the Coordinator of Virtues Unlimited Restorative Justice Initiative (VURJI), has warned the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) against approving the importation of methyl bromide, an odorless, colorless gas used to control pests in agriculture and shipping, into the country.

The retired justice said she had written Moji Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency and copied other agencies like the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, about the negative effect of methyl bromide to humans and the environment.

Oloyede, who retired from the Osun State's judiciary, said the agro-chemical had been banned because it was dangerous to human health and caused environmental hazards by depleting the ozone layer.

The retired judge said the whole world had not been able to contain the effects of depletion of ozone layer, stressing that Nigeria, bedevilled with numerous challenges, could not afford to add the chemical issue to them.

The VURJI coordinator said she was shocked to learn that the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services allegedly denounced NAFDAC’s earlier warning that agro-users should desist from using methyl bromide.
