It was learnt that the attack was carried out on Sunday.

It was learnt that the military men guiding the road were killed before an attack was launched by the assailants on prison officers.

The assailants thereafter set the prisoners free.

A statement released by the service, through the NCoS spokesperson, Francis Enobore, said, “The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, Kogi State, has been attacked by yet-to-be identified gunmen and 240 inmates forcefully released."

Enobore said around (10:45 pm) on Sunday, numerous attackers “engaged the armed guards in a fierce gun battle," AFP reports.

Investigations were under way to find the escapees, he added.

It is not clear who carried out the attack but central and northwest Nigeria have been terrorised by criminal gangs for years.

Large prison outbreaks are not uncommon in Nigeria.

On April 5, 2021, gunmen raided Owerri police headquarters, Imo State, freeing more than 1,800 inmates.
