BREAKING: Drama As Retirees Block Government House In Cross River Over Unpaid Gratuities, Pensions

The organised labour in the State has been on an indefinite strike for weeks over the same issue among others.

A mild drama is currently unfolding in Calabar, Cross River State, as retirees have blocked access to the Government House.

The aggrieved workers are protesting against unpaid gratuities and pensions.

SaharaReporters gathered that security operatives are unsure of what to do as Governor Ben Ayade and his Plateau State counterpart, Simon Lalong are said to be in the House of Assembly for the valedictory session for a former Speaker of the Assembly, Mike Ogar.

The organised labour in the State has been on an indefinite strike for weeks over the same issue among others.

Others include implementation of promotions, minimum wage, and incremental rates.

The union had questioned the failure of the state government to pay the gratuities despite the application for two tranches of bailout funds and Paris Club refunds by the State.

The monies, totalling over N30 billion was meant to aid the payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities.

But, according to labour, the state owes nearly N50 billion in unpaid gratuities alone dating as far back as 1999 for local government retirees and 2014 for state retirees.

The current administration led by Ben Ayade is said to be responsible for the unpaid gratuities to more than 70 per cent of the local government retirees and more than 80 per cent of the state retirees.

Several efforts to address the matter have not yielded results as negotiations have stalled with threats from the State falling on deaf ears.
