Gunman Trapped Inside Jos Prison Shot Dead, Prison Guard, Nine Inmates Also Killed

The gunmen had engaged the security personnel in the prison in a gun battle before breaking into the yard.

The Nigeria Correctional Centre (NCoS) has said 252 inmates are at large following Sunday's attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State by gunmen suspected to be bandits. 

The Controller of Corrections (Public Relations Officer), Francis Enobore, on Monday also said one of the gunmen trapped in the prison facility has been killed.

He, however, regretted the death of a member of the armed squad of the NCoS, who lost his life in the gun duel. 

It was learnt that nine inmates also lost their lives. 

Enobore said, “Another staff of the Service was shot in the hand and six inmates were also injured in the attack. 

He said a total of 262 inmates escaped during Sunday's before reinforcement could come from sister services.

But only 10 of them have so far been recaptured with 252 others still at large.[story_link align="left"]101726[/story_link]

He said, “The Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa condoled with the family and friends of the gallant officer who paid the ultimate price in the encounter promising that the death will not be in vain as all the perpetrators will be hunted and made to face the full wrath of the law.

"He thanked the officers and men of other security agencies for the assistance in bringing the situation under control and assured members of the public that the safety of inmates including their care and support, will continue to be a top priority in his administration.

“He called for collaboration from patriotic individuals to apprehend the fleeing inmates as well as volunteering credible intelligence that could nip such ugly incidents in the bud."

In a statement on Sunday, Enobore said the gunmen had engaged the security personnel in the prison in a gun battle before breaking into the yard.

He, however, added that the gunmen had been trapped in the facility.[story_link align="left"]101711[/story_link]

He had said, “The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State came under attack by gunmen who reportedly stormed the facility in large number with sophisticated weapons.

“The invaders were said to have arrived at the Custodial Center at about 1720hrs and immediately made for the main gate where they engaged the armed squad personnel in a gun battle before breaking into the yard.

“Although they gained entrance to the yard, they are however trapped within as men from sister security services were immediately mobilised to assist the armed guards to cordon the perimeter wall and the entire area.

“Reinforcement from the response squad of the Service has also been mobilised to the centre.

“The situation is presently under control as the attackers firing power is being subdued by superior fire from a combined team of security agencies. Update will be made available as event unfolds.”

Before the attack, the prison facility had 1,060 inmates comprising 560 pre-trial detainees and 500 convicts.

Similarly, some gunmen on Monday, October 18 attacked the Oko Medium Security Centre in Edo State and freed the inmates.

The gunmen overpowered the armed guards at the facility and looted shops along the road to the facility,

Also on Friday, October 22, gunmen attacked one of the facilities of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), in Oyo State, known as Abolongo correctional facility. 

It was gathered that the gunmen set all the prisoners at the facility free during the attack.

It was gathered that the attackers used grenades to gain access and set prisoners free.
