Petrol Tanker Accident Claims 17 Lives, 14 Burnt Beyond Recognition In Ogun

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the accident happened around 5 am on Friday, close to the Isara bridge in Ogun State.

At least 17 persons have died in an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a tanker involved in the crash caught fire.

The spokesperson of the FRSC in Ogun, Florence Okpe, said 14 persons were burnt beyond recognition, and that a man, woman and girl could still be identified by their relations, Daily Post reports.

 

“The total number of people involved is not ascertained, but a total of 17 bodies (killed) have been identified.

 

“One male, one female, and one female child only have been identified, while others were burnt beyond recognition and no injury sustained,” Okpe said.

 

She added that the tanker had a head-on collision with a Mazda bus with registration number – ZT 728 KLD.

 

“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were route violation and dangerous driving, which resulted in a head-on collision and fire outbreak,” she said.

 

Meanwhile, the Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Ahmed Umar, described the crash as avoidable.

He offered his condolences to the families of the accident victims, urging motorists to drive with caution and obey traffic rules and regulations.
