Nigeria Police Fail To Produce Charges Filed Against Sowore Despite Arresting His Lawyer, Abubakar Marshal

Sowore accused the police of failing to provide him with information regarding the alleged “criminal defamation” charges filed against him.

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT Police Command has refused to release details and copies of charges it filed against human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore.

The police had illegally arrested the activist on the Court of Appeal premises on the alleged orders of a businessman and former lawmaker, Ned Nwoko over some trumped-up allegations.

Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesman, who confirmed Marshal’s arrest on Friday, said he had been “charged to court following his failure to produce the suspect,” adding that this is in line with standard best practices.

Reacting, Sowore accused the police of failing to provide him with information regarding the alleged “criminal defamation” charges filed against him.

On Monday, he said, “Following the despicable police conduct that led to the arrest and unjust attacks imprisonment of one my attorneys, Marshal Abubakar last Friday, today, I reached out to the Commander of the CID Unit of FCT Police Commander to request him to provide me with information regarding the alleged charges the police claimed they filed against me accusing me of “criminal defamation” of a so-called Billionairë, Ned Nwoko.

“In particular, I sent him a request asking for details and copies of the charges, the court where the charges were filed and the date of arraignment if any, the Commander is yet to respond to my request.”
