Nigerian Police Confirm Attack On Enugu Checkpoint Where Gunmen Killed Three Officers

The Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the Thursday morning attack on its checkpoint at MTD Junction, Garriki in Akwuke in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state by unknown gunmen.

The command however, was silent on the casualty figures as SaharaReporters had reported that three officers were feared killed during the attack.

Command's spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the attack in a text message, said that the Command's Tactical Squad and other operational units had been deployed to track down the hoodlums.

He said, "There was an attack on policemen on a stop-and-search duty this morning, along Agbani Road, close to Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway, by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums.

"However, details of the incident are still sketchy, while Command's Tactical/Operational Operatives have been mobilised and are on the trail of the miscreants. Further development will be communicated, please."

SaharaReporters had earlier in the morning reported that gunmen attacked police checkpoint at MTD Junction, Garriki in Akwuke along in Agbani road.

The incident which happened around 9:30am in the morning had destructed economic and activities within the area as businesses quickly closed thereafter.

Sources had told SaharaReporters that no fewer than three policemen were killed.

One of the sources said "my dear as we speak people are still running helter-skelter; the gunmen are still shooting sporadically. I am calling you from my hiding place.

"The checkpoint the hoodlums attacked is in front of MTD Police Station in Akwuke, opposite Boom plaza near tipper park before Enugu-Port-Harcourt highway.

"I don't know the extent of casualties but what I heard is that the gunmen had already killed three policemen. When I was passing the checkpoint around 8:30am the operatives were six in number."
