Nigeria is reportedly dealing with several issues, but security has proven to be the most pressing.

Members of the National Assembly have insisted that they will carry out their threat to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari when the six-week deadline given to him to tackle insecurity in the country expires.

Nigeria is reportedly dealing with several issues, but security has proven to be the most pressing.

Attacks by terrorists and criminal groups have taken place in numerous areas, and more recently in the capital, Abuja.

On July 5, hundreds of convicts, including some who had been convicted or accused of terrorism, were released after an attack on Kuje prison, Abuja by terrorists.

Six soldiers on patrol in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, were slain in a fight with armed men in July.

Widespread kidnapping of school pupils is also a major concern, forcing the authorities to order the closure of all public and private schools in Abuja recently to curb the ugly trend.

In four weeks, Buhari will receive his final warning on the deteriorating security situation, and the opposition legislators in the National Assembly have stated that they will not back down from their intention to impeach the President.

Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who represents the Osun East senatorial district, Enyinnaya Abaribe, the former minority leader of the Senate, Toby Okechukwu, the Deputy Minority Leader of the ninth House of Representatives (PDP, Enugu), and Nicholas Tofowomo, the senator representing Ondo South senatorial district, all insisted that the impeachment process of Buhari is still alive, during interviews with Politics Nigeria.

“Even northern senators are in support of the impeachment; you heard Senator Clifford (Ordia) from Edo, Senator Bulkachuwa (Mohammed), and the rest,” Fadahunsi said.

He added: “We are not backing down on the impeachment move and, I won’t back down.”

Meanwhile, it was learnt that President Buhari's impeachment is being actively resisted by the leadership of the Senate and the military chiefs.
