On March 14, the union extended the industrial action by another two months to allow the government to meet all of its demands. A 12-week extension was announced on May 9.

Since May 9, the union has remained on strike, vowing to persist until its demands are met.

The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities and academic autonomy among other demands.

But the university claimed in a circular released on Tuesday through the office of Registrar, Musa Labbo Jega, that despite the uninterrupted payment of salaries and other benefits to staff members and the persuasive strategy used by appointing a committee to look into additional concerns raised by the unions, the unions continue with the solidarity strike.

It added that if caution was not taken, it would result in the complete collapse of the system.

The circular reads: "I am directed to draw the attention of all staff unions that Education is still on the concurrent list of the Nigerian Constitution whereby both Federal and State Governments have the right to establish and operate Universities on their separate terms and conditions of service.

"I am to further draw your attention to the fact that each and every state university entered into contractual agreement of employment with its staff or workforce without the intervention of any union and/or third party.

“However, the Council observed with dismay that despite the salaries and other entitlements being uninterruptedly paid to the members of staff in addition to the persuasive approach adopted by putting a committee to look into other issues raised by the unions, the unions still continue with the solidarity strike which if care is not taken will lead to the total collapse of the system.

"It is in the light of the foregoing, that the council once again appeals to all the unions to resume work without further delay or the principle of no work no pay and other sanctions will commence with effect from the month of August 2022 in accordance with the conditions of service of the University.

"I, therefore look forward to your resumption without further delay and in the same vein assure you that the Council will do everything possible within its powers to enhance the welfare of the staff."
