The police last Friday arrested Jalingo after hours of laying siege to his Lagos residence.

Elizabeth Ayade, the wife of Frank Ayade – a brother of the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, on Monday failed to show up at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command over a petition she wrote against the journalist and activist, Agba Jalingo.

The police last Friday arrested Jalingo after hours of laying siege to his Lagos residence.

He was arrested for allegedly defaming the character of Elizabeth.

The journalist was later detained at Alapere Police Station, Lagos. He was moved to Abuja on Saturday.

The police on Saturday night granted bail to Jalingo and asked him to report to the command on Monday as the petitioner would be available.

However, SaharaReporters gathered that activists led by the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore stormed the police headquarters on Monday in solidarity with the journalist while Elizabeth Ayade was absent.

The governor’s in-law was said to have claimed to be sick of trauma.

Speaking at the police headquarters, Sowore asked the police to let go of the journalist since there was no complainant on the ground.

The activist told the detectives that they were merely wasting police resources to pursue a vendetta on behalf of the rich.

“Femi Falana sent one of his lawyers, Marshal Abubakar, Sowore went there too with Agba Jalingo but after several hours of waiting, the lawyer to the complainant claimed she was sick of trauma.

“We all then requested that Agba Jalingo be let go since there is no complainant. Sowore directed that Agba Jalingo be notified to appear when the complainant is ready.

“The DC of CID, Ahmed Musa stated that they can’t continue with the case since the complainant failed to show up.

"Sowore told the police that the case is a waste of journalist Jalingo’s time. He requested the police to give him time to partake in the presidential campaign and return in March 2023 in case the complainant is ready by then.

"He told the detectives that they were merely wasting police resources to pursue vendetta on behalf of the rich.

“Agba was asked to leave and return when they could figure out when the complainant is ready,” one of the activists at the station told SaharaReporters.
