2023 Presidential Election: Tinubu, Shettima, APC Governors Visit Jonathan, Seek Ex-President’s Support

Tinubu

Tinubu was accompanied to Jonathan’s residence in Abuja by his running mate, Kashim Shettima and some governors in the APC.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu Tuesday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan to seek the latter’s support in the 2023 election.

Tinubu was accompanied to Jonathan’s residence in Abuja by his running mate, Kashim Shettima and some governors in the APC.

SaharaReporters learnt the visit was to seek the support of the former President for Tinubu’s ambition.

Tinubu previously met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The governors include Simon Lalong of Plateau, Bello Matawalle of Zamfara, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun; Mohammed Badaru of Jigawa.

Incidentally, some of them were Jonathan’s biggest critics when he was President.

In November 2020, some APC governors also visited Jonathan, sparking rumours of planned defection. They included Yobe State Governor and former Acting National Chairman of the APC, Mai Mala Buni; Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi, who had defected to the APC from the PDP; Kebbi State governor, Atiku Bagudu, and Jigawa State governor, Abubakar Badaru.

SaharaReporters also reported how a cabal in the Presidency had also pushed for Jonathan to emerge as a consensus presidential candidate of the APC but the move collapsed at the last minute, with Tinubu emerging as the presidential candidate at the party’s primary election in May 2022.
