ASUU embarked on strike on February 14th this year over the Nigerian government's failure to meet its demands.

Gombe State University (GSU) has pulled out of the ongoing six-month-old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU embarked on strike on February 14th this year over the Nigerian government's failure to meet its demands.

The public university lecturers’ union is asking the government to fund the revitalisation of tertiary institutions. It is also asking the government to release N220 billion each year, review the NUC 2004 Act to tackle the proliferation of universities; allocate 26 percent of its budgets to the education sector and implement the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

However, the Governing Council of the state university after a meeting on Thursday directed all academic staff members of the school to resume work immediately.

According to a report by Daily Trust, the directive was contained in an internal memo dated September 2, 2022, and signed by the Registrar of the university, Dr. Abubakar Aliyu Bafeto.

The Registrar said the management of the institution arrived at the decision after its second emergency meeting held on Thursday.

Bafeto added that attendance registers had been provided at the respective Head of Departments’ (HODs) offices for lecturers willing and ready to resume classes.

He further stated that the university management would apply the ‘No-Work, No-Pay’ policy for all staff members who fail to resume by September 9, 2022.

Bafeto was quoted as saying, “Accordingly, the university management wishes to bring this information to the attention of all academic staff that the governing council at its second emergency meeting held on Thursday, September 1, 2022, deliberated on the protracted industrial action embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as it affects Gombe State University.

“After exhaustive deliberations, the council resolved and directed that all academic staff should resume work immediately. Attendance registers have been provided at the HODs offices for those willing and ready to resume.”
