Liz Truss has begun appointing her cabinet after being officially asked by the Queen to form a new government.

Shortly after making her first speech as PM, details began to emerge as to who would be in Ms Truss's new cabinet.

Liz Truss handed top cabinet roles to her political allies, drawing the accusation she was building a “cabinet of cronies”.

The Independent reports that the new prime minister made Kwasi Kwarteng chancellor, Suella Braverman home secretary, James Cleverly foreign secretary and Therese Coffey deputy prime minister and health secretary.

Meanwhile, she culled supporters of her leadership rival Rishi Sunak from the government as she began appointing a cabinet of close political allies.

Prominent ministers of Boris Johnson’s cabinet including Dominic Raab, Grant Shapps and Steve Barclay all announced they were returning to the backbenches soon after Ms Truss entered Downing Street for the first time as prime minister.

One former special adviser to a minister in Mr Johnson’s cabinet told The Independent he feared the new prime minister was creating a “cabinet of cronies”.

According to the report, in her first speech as prime minister, Ms Truss vowed to “tackle the issues holding Britain back” and said her priorities were to “get Britain working”, “deal hands-on with the energy crisis” and “put our health service on a firm footing”.

Dominic Raab, Grant Shapps, Steve Barclay and George Eustice - the four most prominent backers of Mr Sunak in the Cabinet - have all been sacked.

Ms Truss is appointing the rest of her Cabinet this evening.
