Niger State House of Assembly has impeached its Majority Leader, Saleh Ibrahim.

Other members of the Assembly impeached on Thursday by the lawmakers were the Deputy Majority Leader, Binta Mamman and Chief Whip, Bello Ahmed.

The Nation reports that the impeached lawmakers were replaced by Mohammed Abba Bala as the new Majority Leader; Madaki Malik Bosso as the Deputy Majority Leader and Salihu Tama Edati as the new Chief Whip.

It is not yet clear why the lawmakers were impeached but it could be recalled that the Deputy Majority Leader, Binta Mamman was impeached alongside the former Majority Leader, Abba Mohammed in December 2020 for alleged negligence of duty.

However, Mamman's impeachment was reversed during deliberation on the grounds that she was in isolation, recovering from a coronavirus infection at the time, while that of Mohammed was upheld as he was absent during plenary.
