The Katsina State Government has imposed an immediate state-wide ban on the consumption and sale of shisha and other non-medical substances.

In a statement released on Friday in Katsina, the state Director of Information, Buhari Mamman-Daura, announced the prohibition.

He said that the Innovative Inhalants Order 2022, which was signed on September 5 by Governor Aminu Masari, included a ban on shisha and other unconventional intoxicants.

According to the Director, "This is in accordance with the powers conferred upon him by the provision of Section 5 Sub Section 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.

“With this development, the sales, inhalation or dealing in any non-medical substances particularly shisha is banned throughout the state."

He claimed that the government made the decision in light of the state's growing youth shisha addiction.

According to him, anyone found in violation of the order would be subject to punishment under Section 114 of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State 2021.

According to medical professionals, smoking shisha has equal health risks to smoking cigarettes and can result in cardiovascular problems like angina, congestive heart failure, heart attacks, or stroke.

In terms of nicotine content, shisha is nearly comparable to cigarettes.
