Nigerian Lawyer Writes Ondo University Alumni Association, Seeks Details Of Spending Within 14 Days

The lawyer is interested in knowing how much the president of the association spent on its Annual Convention, General Assembly; Inauguration of branches; Ongoing Construction of Students’ Hostel.

An Akure-based legal practitioner, Olugbenga Akinkuotu has demanded an explanation of the spending of the Alumni Association of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

In a letter to the worldwide president of the Association dated August 10, 2022, the legal practitioner said he was making the request in his dual capacity as a financial member of the Alumni Association and as a legal practitioner passionate about good governance and proper administration.

According to the lawyer, the request is made under the extant provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, 2011 "directing you to furnish me with up-to-date revenue and spending details of the AAUA Alumni Association since you assumed office in 2018.

The lawyer is interested in knowing how much the president of the association spent on its Annual Convention, General Assembly; Inauguration of branches; Ongoing Construction of Students’ Hostel; Foundation-laying of Alumni Secretariat and Endowment Scheme for indigent students.

Others are the Annual hosting of student empowerment programmes; donation of office equipment to AAUA; Alumni connect on Facebook, calls and data; as well as Cooperative Society.

He said: "I want the Certified True Copies of the receipts of all income and expenditure. I also want a Certified True Copy of the minutes of the meeting wherein approval was given to your office to Carry out the aforementioned projects."

"And finally, Mr President, I want an explanation on why the account of the Association has not been audited in line with Article 8(d) of the Alumni Constitution since you assumed office." 

Akinkuotu threatened to seek redress in court if the Alumni president fails to furnish him with the request within 14 days in compliance with Section 20 and other provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2011.
