Some gunmen have reportedly killed the wife of an operative of Enugu State Neighbourhood Watch in Umuopu community in Southeast Nigeria.

The community is Enugu Ezike in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state.

The victim has been identified as Ogochukwu Onuh.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident happened on Friday night.

Sources said the gunmen had come for the victim's husband, one Mr Akada Onuh, who incidentally is the leader of the neighbourhood watch in the town. He was said to have got intel and escaped before the hoodlums arrived, leaving his wife and children behind.

"Unfortunately, after they searched for him and he could not be found, they shot the wife and fled," one of the sources who spoke to SaharaReporters said.

She was said to have been rushed to a hospital where the doctors pronounced her dead.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Igbo-Eze North local government area had been under constant gunmen attack shortly after the state government imposed a curfew in the council area and Igbo-Eze South following an attack on the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the community.

Several people have also been killed by soldiers deployed in the area.

Efforts to get the reaction of the state police command were unsuccessful as the command's spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe did not answer when our correspondent called him on his mobile phone.
