Nigerian Police Arrest Six Persons Over Attack On Anambra Monarch’s Palace During Festival

The PPRO stated that some persons known to be allies of the proscribed monarch attacked police operatives

The Nigeria Police Force, Anambra State Command has confirmed the arrest of six persons who attacked its operatives at the palace of the proscribed traditional ruler of Awka, Augustine Ndigwe.

SaharaReporters learnt that police operatives allegedly deployed on Saturday to stop Ndigwe from holding a new yam festival at his palace as the state government had proscribed him and threatened to sanction him if he continued to parade himself as a monarch.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said the command's deployment to the palace was to forestall trouble as the community had been factionalised.

Meanwhile, the PPRO stated that some persons known to be allies of the proscribed monarch attacked police operatives, but luck ran out of them as they were later arrested.

Ikenga in a statement made available to newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital said, “Today 11/9/2022 we wish to let the members of the public know especially Ndi Anambra that, the deployment of police operatives yesterday 10/9/2022 within the residence of Augustine Ndigwe in Awka, is to make sure there is no breakdown of law and order in Awka Community.

“Meanwhile, one Mr Nwokoye that led the attack on police officers is in custody with five others. The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal investigations department for investigations.

“The situation is being monitored and further development shall be communicated.”
