This is sequel to the ruling of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice.

After two years and 10 months, the Nigerian government is to compensate the family of the slain Kogi State Women leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mrs Salome Acheju Abuh, with the sum of N10 million.

This is sequel to the ruling of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice.

Recall that Mrs. Abuh was burnt alive by a group of political thugs, in her Ochadamu home in Kogi State during the November 16 governorship election in the state.

Following her gruesome murder, her family members, Simeon Sheidu Abuh, Ogbadu David Abuh and Daniel Achimugu instituted a law suit through their counsel, Dr. Daniel Makolo.

In a judgment on the fundamental rights of Mrs Abuh to life, the ECOWAS regional court held the Nigerian government liable for neglect and failure in its obligations to protect the life of the deceased.

According to Daily Post, the court in the judgment delivered via Zoom by a three-man panel of justices, held that security operatives especially failed to act and save the deceased when she was being attacked despite their presence.

According to the Court, the deceased would have been saved if the police had discharged their constitutional obligations on behalf of the Federal Government.

Consequently, the court issued an order to the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately set up a high-powered panel to investigate the circumstances that led to the killing of the woman.

The court also ordered the government to fish out the perpetrators of the dastard crime and make them face the full wrath of the law.

The Nigerian government was represented in the suit by Mrs Maimuna Shiru, while the three Justices who delivered the unanimous judgment against the government were Edward Amoako Asante, Gberi-Be Ouattara and Dupe Atoki.
