Following allegations that the crime was intentional, the Nigerian was last week denied bail at a sessions’ court.

Omoidada Omoragbon, a 62-year-old Nigerian, has been detained by Indian police after it was claimed that he used counterfeit currency to pay for a medical bill.

The Times of India reports that the Nigerian man's wife's IVF facility, where he had brought her for treatment, discovered that a sizable portion of the Rs 128,000 (about N701,000) payment he was scheduled to make had been made with fake currency.

The clinic discovered that 58 of the Rs 2000 (or around N635,000) notes supplied by Omoragbon were false after deciding to utilise a bank verification machine to confirm the payment.

Following allegations that the crime was intentional, the Nigerian was last week denied bail at a sessions’ court.

“At this stage, that is, at the time of filing of charge sheet, it cannot be said that there is no evidence against the accused and that he is not involved in the commission of the offence,” the court said.

“In such circumstances, if the accused is released on bail, there is possibility that he would tamper with evidence and abscond from India.”

Omoragbon believed he was innocent despite being denied bail and saying there was no proof against him. Additionally, he asserted that the notes may have been tampered with by bank or IVF clinic employees.
