Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Edo State government vehicles on Friday evening invaded the headquarters of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company Plc (BEDC) in Benin City, the state capital.
SaharaReporters gathered that the fully armed policemen numbering about 30 stormed the power distribution company's headquarters at around 6:15pm when most staff had closed work and left the office.
It was gathered that the forceful invasion by the security agents was to claim an alleged forceful mandate given to install Mr. Henry Ajagbawa as the Managing Director of the company against the court order.
A source close to the company told SaharaReporters that "Around 6.15pm after close of work on Friday 16th September, 2022, when most staff had left the office, a battalion of about 30 fully armed policemen dressed in camouflage and normal police uniform invaded the headquarters of BEDC Electricity Plc in Benin City with about 8 vehicles with the name of Edo State Government on the vehicles to take over the offices of BEDC and claiming forceful mandate given to install Mr. Henry Ajagbawa as Managing Director beyond the law."
According to the source "The unlawful invasion was notwithstanding the subsisting orders of the Federal High Court in Suit No FHC/ABJ/CS/1113/2022 in which Mr. Ajagbawa, K. C. Akuma, Adeola Ijose, Charles Onwera and Yomi Adeyemi were restrained from parading themselves as directors of BEDC Electricity Plc.
"The said orders of the court also restrained Fidelity Bank PLC and Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission from taking over the business and premises of BEDC."
But the source said that when the armed policemen arrived at the BEDC premises, "The private security men guarding the premises were threatened with forced arrest if they did not allow the entry whilst the armed policemen positioned themselves in combat formation."
When contacted, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor did not answer calls made to his phone number, neither did he reply a text message sent to him as of the time of filing this report.
