The incident occurred on Sunday in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.

The Sector Commander, Maikano Hassan, who confirmed to journalists the high-speed that led to the tragedy, said a middle-aged woman was involved in a lone accident in Calabar.

Hassan said the accident was caused by excessive speeding involving a Toyota Highlander along Murtala Muhammed Highway in Calabar.

He said the accident claimed the life of the lone female driver who veered off the road and crashed into a ditch.

"Though the woman was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, she was said to have died a few minutes later due to the injury sustained from the incident.”

However, sources who spoke to Vanguard, claimed the woman was in pursuit of her husband who was alleged to be with his mistress in his car when she lost control of her vehicle.

Trouble was said to have started when the woman reportedly sighted her husband with a woman leaving SPAR Shopping Mall on Sunday evening. Her efforts to block her husband’s car with her Toyota SUV failed as he manoeuvred his way out and dashed out of the complex.

“Her husband was said to have manoeuvred his vehicle out of the attempted blockade and then taken the Murtala Muhammed Highway, with his wife in pursuit," said one of the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Unfortunately, in a bid to outrun her husband, she lost control of the speeding vehicle, veered off the road and slammed the vehicle headlong into a tree, damaging the vehicle beyond repairs and also killing herself."
