Communities in Borno have been advised by the Peace Ambassador Centre for Humanitarian and Empowerment (PACHE) to welcome and forgive Boko Haram terrorists who feel remorse.
During a celebration honouring the 2022 International Day of Peace in Maiduguri, Ahmed Shehu, president of the non-governmental organisation, made the call.
The day, also formally known as World Peace Day, is a holiday recognised by the UN and celebrated annually on September 21.
The ‘repentant’ terrorists have started to be reintegrated into communities, according to Mr. Shehu, who urged people to accept them and move on.
He said, “Borno needs to celebrate the day for obvious reasons after facing 13 years of insurgency that led to loss of lives, mass destruction and displacement of many in the north east.
“We call on the Borno government to ensure that civil society organisations are strongly involved in the process of sensitising the public on the reintegration process.”
Babakura Abba-Jato, the Commissioner for Information, also praised Borno residents for their fortitude and the necessity of maintaining the pace and reintegration process, NAN reports.
Capt. B.A. Amakiri, who spoke on behalf of the military and defined the troops as agents committed to peace, stated that over 80,000 insurgents had so far turned themselves in, of which around 16,000 were combatants.
According to Mr. Amakiri, 25% of the accomplishments were achieved through kinetic means, and 75% through non-kinetic means, which involved civilian backing for the military.
He, therefore, called for more support for the military and other security organisations to facilitate the return of lasting peace for more developments.
