The attack, SaharaReporters gathered happened at Nomeh Primary School Station in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

Gunmen wielding AK-47 rifles believed to be political thugs have again attacked a Labour Party meeting in Enugu State.

The attack, SaharaReporters gathered happened at Nomeh Primary School Station in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that masked gunmen attacked Labour Party meetings in Aninri and Awgu local government areas.

The gunmen, numbering about four, were reported to have stormed the meeting venue and accused the members of the party of bringing “Fulani” into ‘Biafraland’.

The development led the members to scamper to safety as the hoodlums shot indiscriminately.

SaharaReporters could not independently ascertain whether the gunmen were the same hoodlums who attacked members of the party in Aninri and Awgu local council areas last month.

The video of the attack seen by SaharaReporters shows as chairs and canopies were destroyed at the venue of the meeting.

The recent attack has elicited condemnation and outrage, as some residents of the state have questioned why Labour Party supporters seem to be the target of such attacks.

A social commentator, Charles Ogbu, while reacting to development called on the Nigeria Police to live up to their expectations and protect the people.

Ogbu warned that the constant targeting of Labour Party ward meetings for attacks by armed men in different parts of the state by 'political actors' masquerading as agitators has to stop.

He said, “This particular incident happened on Saturday, two days ago. And it has absolutely nothing to do with Biafra, IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) or chasing Fulani away. These were purely political actors who are scared of the tsunamic wave of the OBI-DIENT Movement across the country.

“The PDP has a Fulani as its political candidate. The APC has a Yoruba as its presidential candidate. The Labour Party has an Igbo man as its presidential candidate. Yet, it is the Labour Party that has an Igbo presidential candidate that is being attacked with the accusation of trying to bring back the Fulani into the Southeast. Does that make any sense? This is to tell you that these constant attacks are sponsored by politicians from Enugu state who think we lack the critical thinking skills to decipher the truth ourselves.

“Dear Nigeria Police Force, you’d do well to put a stop to this. And the state governor, Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi needs to act on this. Ugwuanyi’s greatest achievement is maintaining peace in the state even at a time other neighbouring states were boiling.

“But if these armed attacks on Labour Party offices and gatherings are not stopped immediately, Enugu risks losing its peaceful nature and that will be a shame."

The state chairman of Labour Party, Mr Casmir Agbo confirmed the attack to SaharaReporters on the phone on Monday morning.

Although, he didn't provide details of the attack, Agbo promised to issue a statement on the incident on Tuesday.

"Yes, our members were attacked by gunmen wielding AK-47 rifles in Nomeh Primary School Station on Saturday. But I can't provide the details now. I am somewhere and will provide details to later,” he said.
