Nobody Is Above Any Other Member In PDP, Atiku Support Group Says Amid Internal Crisis

September 26, 2022

He made this statement while reacting to the ongoing internal crisis that is rocking the opposition party in a Twitter post on Friday.

The Director of Atiku Support Group, known as Atikukawai Media Group, Abban Atiku has said the Peoples Democratic Party belongs to everyone and not to a particular group of people.

He made this statement while reacting to the ongoing internal crisis that is rocking the opposition party in a Twitter post on Friday.

He said nobody should be seen as being above the interest of the party and urged the party’s elders to meet all the different camps and resolve their differences diplomatically.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and Atiku have been at loggerheads since the party held its presidential primary election in May. The election was won by Atiku, but Wike has alleged that there was a gang-up against him, identifying the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu as one of those allegedly involved.

Wike and some other chieftains of the party in Southern Nigeria have since called on Ayu to resign from office to give room for someone from the southern region to take over, for the sake of fairness.

Both Atiku and Ayu are northerners. Ayu has, however, refused to resign.

Abban Atiku said, “Nobody is above anybody in the PDP and the Party belongs to everyone and not any individual. We must set things right.

“We need Wike and his camp to win election, so also Ayu, Adamu Maina Waziri, Sule Lamido, Tambuwal and the rest of the PDP members and stalwarts to win election.

“Atiku as a candidate needs the support of the majority of Nigerians and not even those in the PDP alone.

“In this internal crisis, I won't take sides because both factions have their own valid reasons.

“If I were to advise the PDP elders on this, I will advise them to call for an emergency meeting and both the factions should be present for things to be cleared out amicably. And if in the unlikely event that Ayu happens to leave forcefully, then he should not move out alone, the entire NWC should resign with him honourably.

“The terrible mistake the PDP will make as a party at this juncture is; allowing Umaru Iliya Damagum to become the next Party Chairman after Ayu.

“As I said earlier everyone is important and we need one another to win the forthcoming election, and I believe, those at the helm of the affairs of the party will as a matter of urgency call all the respected aggrieved party members to order and make the necessary changes for peace to reign and for the party's betterment.”

Meanwhile, Atiku on Sunday described the internal crisis rocking the PDP as a family issue that would be resolved soon.

Atiku spoke as a special guest of honour at the 35th-anniversary celebration of the creation of Akwa Ibom State held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

“Yes, we must acknowledge that we are having an internal family issue, but rest assured that we are not involved or engaged in the war of attrition.

“It is a political disagreement and very soon, all of that will be resolved and the PDP will continue to remain strong, and grow until we win the election, by the grace of God, come February 2023.”

Atiku was represented by the Governor of Sokoto State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Aminu Tambuwal.
