The Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the army and other security agencies has launched manhunt for the fleeing gunmen that attacked its Joint Operation Team checkpoint in Enugu State and killed some operatives.

SaharaReporters had reported on Tuesday that unidentified gunmen attacked combined security checkpoint at Obeagu-Amodu along Amechi-Agbani road in Enugu South local government area of the State and killed an undisclosed number of soldiers and policemen.

It reported that the hoodlums who drove in two Lexus Jeeps and one Toyota Sienna bus stormed the checkpoint around 7:25 am.

They reportedly opened fire at the combined team of Police and military. Although the number of casualties was not revealed, sources said that all the soldiers and policemen in the checkpoint were killed.

Some unconfirmed report said that three soldiers and two policemen were killed in the attack while three soldiers escaped with various degrees of injury.

Meanwhile, there's apprehension in the communities located along the Amechi-Agbani road as young men had become the target of security agencies for reprisal attack.

A community source told SaharaReporters that young men were fleeing the community to avoid being victims of extrajudicial killings and torture which have characterised security operations in the South-East region in the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Enugu State Police Command while speaking on the incident to SaharaReporters, also confirmed that a serious manhunt had been launched to track down the fleeing gunmen.

The Command's spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this to SaharaReporters, however, did not provide casualties details.

Ndukwe simply said, "There was an attack on a Joint Operation Team checkpoint at Amodu in Nkanu West LGA, in the morning hours of today, 27/09/2022.

"However, I await full briefing on the incident due to ongoing intense manhunt of the masked assailants, most of whom escaped the scene of the incident with fatal gunshot injuries, after the gun duel with the Team. Further development will be communicated."
