The Nigerian Government has budgeted N470 billion for university revitalization in the 2023 budget.

This was disclosed by President Muhammadu Buhari while presenting the budget before the National Assembly on Friday.

One of the demands of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has been on strike since February 14, is funding to revitalise public universities.

On Friday, President Buhari reiterated his call to university professors to return to the classroom and demonstrate a better understanding of the nation's current economic condition.

Buhari noted this as he presented the N19.76 trillion 2023 budget projections to the joint session of the National Assembly.

However, the president insisted that tertiary institutions in the country must find other sources of revenue and stop relying entirely on government assistance.

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters had reported that the Nigerian Government on Tuesday registered two academic unions, the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA).

This comes as the government and the main umbrella body of university lecturers, ASUU have been at loggerheads regarding a 2009 FG/ASUU Agreement on the funding of university education, which the government has failed to fully implement.
