Some gunmen in military uniform have reportedly killed two policemen, a deputy superintendent of police and an inspector on stop-and-search duty in Imo State.
The deceased cops, attached to the Umuna Divisional Police Headquarters in the Onuimo council area of the state were reportedly killed in front of the station, where they mounted the stop-and-search operation.
The hoodlums, SaharaReporters gathered, operated in a black Hilux vehicle.
Sources told SaharaReporters on Monday that the attack caused pandemonium in the locality, as other motorists had abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety.
According one of the sources, “The police officers had blocked the road on a stop-and-search this morning, but unknown to them, the black Hilux van with about five men in military uniform were not actually soldiers but bandits, as they opened fire on the unsuspecting police officers and, in the process, killed the DSP and the Inspector and sped off before the other officers who had taken to their heels could react.
"The incident caused pandemonium as motorists quickly abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety,” said the source.
SaharaReporters’ efforts to speak with the Imo Command Spokesman, Michael Abbattam, were unsuccessful as he neither picked calls nor respond to text messages sent to him
