447 persons were nominated for national honours in contrast to the 437 persons in the leaked list.

The Nigerian government has released the final list of persons nominated to receive national honours.

The list was published in national newspapers on Sunday by the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and inter-governmental affairs.

According to the publication, the awards will be presented by President Muhammadu Buhari on October 11, at an event scheduled to hold at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

SaharaReporters reported last Sunday that the Nigerian government had dissociated itself from the purported list of nominees for national honours.

A list of Nigerians including the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, purportedly nominated for national honours by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government had gone viral on the internet.

The list had generated criticism, especially from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who described the nomination of the education minister as an insult to the Nigerian students who had been at home for almost eight months because of the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

While Kayode Fayemi, the governor of Ekiti, was nominated to receive the commander of the order of the Niger (CON), an honour bestowed upon him by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Senate President Bukola Saraki was absent from the list.

Additionally, it was incorrectly stated that Bayo Ogunlesi, the founder of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), is the proprietor of Gatwick Airport.

Meanwhile, there were some changes added to the new list released by the government on Sunday.

In the end, 447 persons were nominated for national honours in contrast to the 437 persons in the leaked list.

Tijani Muhammad-Bande, former president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), is listed among the persons to be honoured with GCON.

The name of the former diplomat was missing from the previous list.

On the final list, both Fayemi and Saraki's names were not included.
