Sources from the community told SaharaReporters that the gunmen took advantage of the bad road leading to the community and laid ambush on Thursday night and are attacking residents returning from town.

Some gunmen have invaded Obeagu community in the Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi State kidnapping an undisclosed number of people.

Sources from the community told SaharaReporters that the gunmen took advantage of the bad road leading to the community and laid ambush on Thursday night and are attacking residents returning from town.

According to the sources, the attack occurred at the same spot where the Fulani herdsmen had attacked and killed 17 people in 2021.

A resident of the community who gave his name as Clement Ngele said that one Cyprian Aja, a teacher with the Union Secondary School Obeagu was badly injured.

He said, "There's serious attack in our community Obeagu again this evening. Some gunmen we believed are Fulani herdsmen invaded our community again. They laid siege at Oluleri-Esha along Obeagu-Egegede road and attacked our people who were returning from town. Many people were abducted. We don't know how many people they have abducted.

"Our people have mobilised boys and community security, they are combing surrounding bushes. Two people were badly injured and one of them is a teacher in one the secondary schools in the community.

"We have alerted security agencies but we haven't seen police or soldiers. As I speak to you, I am in the bush with other boys in search of those abducted. Our neighbouring communities have been alerted about the development. Hopefully we will get them. Our people have informed the governor, David Umahi."

The former Councilor of the community, Hon Ejike Ede, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters.

He said "I thank God for his mercies, I would have being one of the victims now. I got a call that immediately passed the road the hoodlums struck. Some people I passed on the road were victims."

Recall that on March 29, 2021 suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded the community and killed 17 people and burnt vehicle and several motorcycles.

However, despite recovering phone of one of the invaders which was handed over to the state Commissioner of police, no one has been arrested till date in connection with the attack and killings.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Ebonyi State Police Command were unsuccessful as the Command's spokesman, SP Chris Anyanwu, did not answer his calls as the phone rang out.
