EXCLUSIVE: Buhari’s Former Aide, Senator Ita Enang In Perjury Scandal, Allegedly Makes False Claims In Court Documents

The former senator had filed multiple cases in court to challenge the outcome of the primary election and declaration of Obong Akan Udofia, a business mogul, as the governorship candidate of the APC in Akwa Ibom State.

The controversy surrounding the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State has assumed another dimension as Senator Ita Enang, former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Niger Delta Affairs to President Muhammadu Buhari, is involved in a perjury scandal over multiple cases pending in courts.

The former senator had filed multiple cases in court to challenge the outcome of the primary election and declaration of Obong Akan Udofia, a business mogul, as the governorship candidate of the APC in Akwa Ibom State.

In an action before the Federal High Court in Uyo with suit no. FHC/UY/CS/144/2022, Ita Enang sought a declaration of the court to nullify the May 26 primaries wherein Akan Udofia emerged as the candidate of the APC in Akwa Ibom State on the grounds that, inter alia, he was allegedly not a duly registered member of the APC as at the date the governorship primary election was held in the state.

On October 6, 2022, he subsequently filed another application before a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to be joined as a necessary party in a matter brought by Akan Udofia to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish his name and particulars as required by law.

But in a major twist of events, findings by SaharaReporters showed that the Certified True Copies (CTC) of court documents revealed that Senator Ita Enang made false depositions in his applications.

The documents clearly show that Ita Enang had in a counter affidavit, dated July 8, 2022, at the Federal High Court in Uyo, deposed to the fact that he was never invited to appear before the APC Governorship Primaries Appeals Committee.

However, in an affidavit supporting his motion to be joined as a necessary party, dated October 12, 2022, before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Mr. Enang deposed that he was invited and appeared in person before the committee.

Sources accused Enang of deliberately lying under oath and making such conflicting depositions in a desperate bid to manipulate the court process and mislead the judge to enter judgement in his favour.

"The Senator knowingly fabricated false evidence in his affidavits before the Court.

“His statements appear to indicate a high level of desperation and it is tantamount to perjury or lying under oath which is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years imprisonment,” one of the sources said.

The source further revealed that since the perjury scandal was uncovered, Ita Enang has been trying very hard to sweep the matter under the carpet to avoid possible arrest and prosecution by the police.

It is a criminal offence under Section 117 of the Criminal Code and Section 164 (1) of the penal code for anyone to make a false statement on a material particular to an issue before a law court in a judicial proceeding.
